Saturday afternoon’s big game at London Road saw Peterborough United take on Coventry City in the Championship.
For the Sky Blues it was yet another attempt to get their first away win of the season and begin the long climb to safety from the foot of the table.
Posh meanwhile were looking to move back towards mid-table at a venue where excitement has been guaranteed so far this season, their 10 home games prior to today producing 44 goals.
Darren Ferguson’s side however needed just one strike to settle this encounter and leave City staring down the barrel at League One football before the festive period has even got underway.
Andy Thorn will again be able to point to a committed performance from his side, who had their chances to score but the long-suffering supporters won’t be able to clutch at such short straws.
A battle against relegation is one thing but being cut adrift at the bottom is another and Doncaster’s revival (which continued on Saturday as they beat Leicester) means the Sky Blues are six points adrift of their nearest rivals.
Match reaction: Thorn was left fuming about the decision not to award his side a penalty for handball and also to rue the late chances that didn’t go City’s way, saying: “It was as blatant a penalty as I’ve ever seen.
“I saw it again on camera after the game and that just confirmed my view so I spoke to the referee.
“He has not even disputed the fact the ball hit their lad’s hand but told me he couldn’t give it because the ball has been blasted at him. I’m sorry, but I just can’t accept that.
“And what happened at the end – with us hitting the post and the clearance off the line just proves that nothing is going for us at any level of the club.”
