Coventry City and Burton Albion slugged it out in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday night with the Sky Blues triumphing in dramatic style.

5,437 at the Ricoh Arena watched both sides create plenty of chances to win the game within the 90 minutes but to no avail, leaving the tie to go straight to penalties under the rules of the competition.

All 10 penalties from the nominated takers were scored leaving it as sudden death and the scoring did not stop there as a further 8 kicks were netted to make it 9-9. Joe Murphy then made himself a hero, saving from Dean Lyness before slotting home the winning goal.

Caretaker boss Richard Shaw told the official club website after the game that he had been disappointed with the opening 45 minutes but felt that City did enough after the break to win the game.

The draw for the next round of the competition will be made on Saturday.
