The 6th April marks the date of two crucial wins for Coventry City over Liverpool in the 1990’s that boosted their chances of staying in the top-flight.

In 1996, Noel Whelan’s first-half goal secured all three points at Highfield Road as Ron Atkinson’s side began their great escape.

City had looked doomed just a week earlier after a 3-1 defeat by Tottenham which itself came after a 1-0 reverse at Southampton and Big Ron’s on-air confrontation with Sky’s Andy Gray.

Exactly a year later and with Gordon Strachan now in charge, City bounced back from a disastrous 3-1 defeat at home to West Ham two weeks earlier with a stunning come-from-behind win at Anfield.

Noel Whelan again and Dion Dublin in the last minute turned it around after Robbie Fowler’s opener.
