Two-and-a-half months after their epic win over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup final, 50,000 Coventry City fans made the trip to Wembley for the Charity Shield fixture against Everton.

With English clubs barred from Europe, this game was the only real ‘bonus` fixture to arise from the cup win, although of course City were also expecting a big boost to season ticket sales and average crowds.

The only change from the first Wembley line up saw the inclusion of new £780,000 signing David Speedie while Brian Borrows made an appearance as a substitute, a small consolation for missing out on the cup final through injury.

88,000 watched the game, which was decided by Wayne Clarke`s goal, late in the first-half for Everton.
