To those Coventry City fans of a pessimistic outlook (all of us) it looked like a familiar tale of allowing ourselves to start believing in the Sky Blues again as Mark Robins’ side trailed for a large part of their Boxing Day game at Stevenage.

But to underline the point that there is something different in the air in CV6 at the moment the final score read Stevenage 1 Coventry City 3 to put the play-offs within just five points.

Home boss Gary Smith felt David McGoldrick was the difference between the two sides with his ‘movement, his appreciation for the game, his ability to finish and his instincts to get in those areas,’ and Mark Robins was in no mood to dispute the quality of a player who may only have one game left in a City shirt after a fifth booking of the season ruled him out of the MK Dons trip on Saturday.

‘McGoldrick was tremendous. He’s seen the goalkeeper is off the line. It’s all right seeing it but it’s the execution as well. It’s rounded off a good day for us in the end.’

The Sky Blues boss also recognised that, as it said at the top, expectations are creeping up among supporters now.

‘Make no mistake about it, we’re a big club that is punching below our weight.’
