Sky Sports report on Monday that Coventry City youngster Gael Bigirimana is a target for Europa League qualifiers Newcastle United.

The 18-year-old was one of the few shining lights of the Sky Blues’ season after being handed his chance by Andy Thorn, albeit that Bigirimana faded away towards the latter part of his debut campaign.

Named as the Apprentice of the Year in the Championship, it is hard to see Bigirimana being any other than a fringe player next season should he move to Tyneside but the prospect of joining a Premier League club may seem a much more enticing proposition than the current woes affecting CCFC.

The Sheffield Star meanwhile suggests that ambitious League Two side Chesterfield are keen on landing Richard Wood from the Ricoh Arena this summer.

A solid professional throughout his time with City, former Sheffield Wednesday defender Wood has been out since February with a knee injury.

Free agent striker Freddy Eastwood is keen to join Southend United on a permanent basis. The 28-year-old rejoined his former club on loan towards the end of the season as his Coventry City contract headed for expiry.

Speaking to local newspaper The Echo he confirmed that he was hopeful of a return to Roots Hall to be near to his family and that he hadn’t ‘been happy’ since leaving the club for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
