Mark Robins is being reported as the new manager of Coventry City but whoever gets the job will inherit a side that hit another new low at Shrewsbury`s Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday evening.
The new boss, set to be named on Wednesday, may have second thoughts after watching Graham Turner`s men rip apart their visitors with two goals in each half to bounce back immediately from their weekend loss against Scunthorpe.
John Fleck’s penalty and a heavy defeat for Bury mean City are kept off the foot of the table on goals scored but that tiny speck of consolation will fool no one, not least the 600+ plus supporters who were in the away end.
For all the talk of owners, managers, systems and tactics it is the players on the pitch who have let themselves down consistently over the first six weeks of the season, seeing off one manager in Andy Thorn and now another in Richard Shaw.
They do not deserve another chance but will get one as the new boss will have to work with this squad until January barring one or two movements in the loan market.
Even Shaw was moved towards criticism after a display he described as ’embarassing,’ telling BBC CWR: “Whether it was lack of motivation, lack of desire or whatever you want to call it, I think the players let themselves down as well as the supporters that turned up, and yes, I feel let down too.
“You say all the right things before the game and then again at half-time but, for whatever reason, they didn’t do it.”
