Coventry City were 2-1 winners over Colchester United in front of the Sky cameras on Monday night, Stern John opening the scoring and then superbly setting up Michael Doyle for the second.

‘We did not play well, both teams looked very, very nervous but we got two good goals,’ said Micky Adams after the game.

‘We expected them to come out for the second half and throw everything at us and they did but we got a good second goal and that was enough.

‘I’m disappointed we didn’t get a clean sheet. We did not defend properly for their goal and you’re never comfortable at 2-1.

‘It was not the best of games but we’ll take it.’

Colchester manager Geraint Williams saw his side score a late consolation but commented: ‘I think that was one of our worst performances this season. I didn’t think there was much in the game.

‘To be fair Coventry made the best of their two chances and got the two goals. To have three goals from a game of so few chances is quite amazing – it could have been 0-0.’
