More Questions Than Answers

Coventry City’s season is limping slowly to a close, the decline continuing with Saturday’s home defeat at the hands of Leyton Orient.

The points penalty will clearly have had an effect on a group of players who have seen a season’s worth of efforts (well over 50 games) come to nothing.

Manager Steven Pressley has also had to contend with the loss of Leon Clarke, City’s main goal threat, and the balance provided by Blair Adams at left-back. Other factors include the state of pitches at home and away (the same for both teams of course) and the fact that the manager has tried to look at different players in a bid to evaluate his squad for next season.

Unfortunately the Scot’s time in charge looks to have thrown up more questions than answers.

City’s back four picked itself for much of the good run under Mark Robins but Richard Wood is out of contract this summer and William Edjenguele has clearly not convinced those in charge since Robins left. Nathan Cameron looks to be on his way meaning two new central defenders (at least) may be needed.

At the other end of the pitch, Clarke’s absence has been keenly felt. City have scored two goals in their last six games, one from full-back Cyrus Christie and the other a penalty from Carl Baker.

For all his goalscoring feats at Gillingham, Cody McDonald is another player who doesn’t seem to convince the men in charge of the Sky Blues.

Add in a myriad of off-field issues regarding transfer and wage budgets, administration, the ownership of the club and where City will be playing next season and the task of building a promotion-winning squad gets harder still.
