Monday muse: On Landon Donovan & others

Putting off the onset of Monday morning for as long as possible by watching LA Galaxy (including former Sky Blues midfielder Chris Birchall) against Chivas USA in the MLS play-offs on Sunday night, the thoughts of this particular City fan were with the Galaxy’s star man and whether he would be tempted by the prospect of a winter in CV6.

No, not him, the real star player of the team and US footballing legend Landon Donovan, scorer of a goal every three games in an international career that has already taken him well past 100 caps.

After failing to make an impact during his time in the Bundesliga, Donovan remains keen apparently to taste success in Europe. Last off-season he joined Bayern Munich on loan but didn’t get much of a sniff of competitive first-team action.

Obviously a player like that is currently out of our league but some kind of bold move in the transfer market for someone a notch or two down could help bring back some of the missing fans to the Ricoh Arena.

The ground was less than half-full again on Saturday and the fare on offer is unlikely to tempt back any floating voters (hopefully the stag party housed in the Tesco Stand had either had plenty of beer beforehand or were going to after the game).

Fans love to have favourites and at present there isn’t anyone in the Sky Blues’ side who the supporters have really taken to heart in the manner of Mo Konjic or even Michael Mifsud when he first joined from Lillestrom.

It doesn’t have to be a player from overseas but in reality that’s the most likely option given that Premiership players of any stature are not going to drop down a division.

Such a player may not propel us back into the so-called promised land but at least they can make going to the match something to enjoy not something to be endured.
