Back in the Championship with the club he supported as a youngster, Micky Adams brings his Sheffield United side to the Ricoh Arena next Saturday, returning to a stadium he knows very well having been in charge of Coventry City in their first season there.
Adams’ departure from Coventry in January 2007 was mourned by few, having seemingly, in one of the new phrases to have crept into fooball over recent years, taken the team as far as he could.
It turns out of course that Micky has in fact taken City further than anyone else since relegation from the Premier League in 2001.
Roland Nilsson, Gary McAllister, Eric Black, Peter Reid, Iain Dowie and Chris Coleman have all failed to match the 8th place finish Adams achieved in that first season at the Ricoh when home fans enjoyed plenty of vibrant, attacking displays in their new surroundings.
More importantly of course was the fact that City were still playing in the Championship in that first season in CV6.
Adams inherited a mess from Peter Reid the previous side and instilled organisation, passion and spirit into his new squad, enabling them to avoid relegation and end the Highfield Road era in never to be forgotten style.
Blades fans will be hoping for some of the same this season while Sky Blues supporters will hopefully offer a warm welcome back next Saturday.
