Two in-form loan strikers go head-to-head at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday when Coventry City and Scunthorpe meet in a League One game between two sides towards the foot of the table but who both enjoyed excellent midweek wins.

For the Sky Blues all the talk is of David McGoldrick as he scored his 8th and 9th league goals for the club since moving from Nottingham Forest on a deal until the new year. His form since swapping East for West Midlands has seen him linked with a number of clubs including Championship side Barnsley.

The Iron, meanwhile, have seen Leon Clarke of Charlton Athletic net 8 times despite their troubles in the season to date. Clarke scored again on Tuesday in an impressive victory at Walsall which was the first league game under returning boss Brian Laws.

‘It was a terrific win, but we’re not going to get carried away by any stretch of the imagination,’ said Laws after the game. He will be without another loanee, Sheffield Wednesday’s David Prutton, at the weekend after a red card against the Saddlers.

A footnote to the midweek win for City is that it was achieved with a starting XI who, bar James Bailey, were all at the club before Mark Robins was appointed as manager, a positive sign that the manager does appear to be getting more out of a group of players who looked down and out before his arrival.
