Iron Out Some Flaws And City Will Be On Their Way

|

Coventry City’s return to League One ended in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Scunthorpe United on Saturday afternoon but, although losing a one-goal lead is never going to make your manager a happy man, Mark Robins was reasonably pleased with what he saw from his side at the Ricoh Arena.

“I think we’ve played some really good stuff and they’ve been under the cosh,” he told the official CCFC website after the game.

“I think at 1-0 if we’d have got the second goal, we were well on top, they would have gone.”

And the Sky Blues were oh-so-close to getting that crucial strike, hitting the post after Tony Andreu’s free-kick had given them the lead and they were on the attack again when Scunthorpe broke from inside their own-half to equalise, a charging run from Stephen Humphrys being rewarded with a well-timed through ball which he finished neatly.

An excellent goal from the visitors point of view but one which left Robins to rue the way Humphrys had been allowed to make his move without being followed.

A second goal followed for the Iron but even then City had chances to level and Scunthorpe manager Nick Daws praised his goalkeeper Rory Watson for the late save from debutant Jordy Hiwula that preserved the win.

That was a huge save, because Coventry had a lot of momentum and we were fatiguing and tiring,” he told the official SUFC website.

So, all in all, some encouraging signs for the Sky Blues and perhaps worth reflecting that City finished seventh in League Two last season while Scunthorpe made the League One play-offs for the second successive campaign and will be confident of at least repeating that feat this time around.
