A tweet on the Vital Coventry timeline today brought back some good memories…

I remember Pearce’s debut after his move from Wealdstone when a crunching tackle in the opening few minutes of the game showed that the leap from Non-League football to the top-flight of the English game was not one that was going to overawe him.

We all know the story that followed, the Nottingham Forest years and the England drama but Pearce’s signing is a timeless reminder that there are gems in the game below the Football League.

Sadly, the Sky Blues scouting radar has been firmly switched off in recent seasons (aside from Chris Stokes and that deal seemed to come more from a tip-off than anything else) and a lot of Non-League talent, some of it on the doorstep in the shape of David Morgan and Joe Ironside who left Nuneaton Town earlier this season for new clubs.
