After a week of managerial mayhem across the divisions, Coventry City’s League One rivals Crawley Town have made something of a surprise appointment, bringing former Aston Villa, Derby County and Queens Park Rangers boss John Gregory back into the English game.

The move brings back memories of when Coventry City were a Premier League side with a growing reputation and some of the most sought-after players in the top-flight (kids, ask your dads).

Robbie Keane had already netted six goals for the club in eleven games following his move from Wolves and City had hinted at their potential with big wins against Newcastle United and Watford in their previous two home games.

Then the young Irishman endeared himself even further to Sky Blues supporters with the winning goal against Villa, live on Sky on a Monday night in November 1999.

With Gregory thought to be under pressure for his job the home fans sang ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ but Doug Ellis didn’t pull the trigger this time and Villa reached that season’s FA Cup final.
