Iain Dowie was full of praise for his new Coventry City side after they defeated Southampton 2-1 in his first game in charge at the Ricoh Arena.

‘I thought the players’ commitment, effort, spirit and togetherness was second to none,’ said the boss, who is set to sign Michael Hughes on loan from Crystal Palace this week.

‘There were a few weary legs out there tonight – there were lads who hadn’t trained or played a lot. They have put in a huge shift against a top side.

‘It’s a big result, I thought it would be a tough game and so it turned out.’
