Coventry City ground out a vital League One victory, their first of the season at the Ricoh Arena, against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

An open game was settled by a single goal, David McGoldrick netting just after the hour to cap an excellent week for the Sky Blues as their gradual improvement under Mark Robins continued.

The manager again shuffled his pack with Nathan Cameron and John Fleck starting the game while Callum Ball made an impact as a half-time substitute.

City boss Mark Robins told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire: “It was a game that was there for the taking and we didn’t look like we were going to do that – it looked like we needed to put more tempo into it.

“The first half was really lacklustre but, in the second half, we needed the spark, Callum Ball gave us the spark and David McGoldrick got his toe on it. An unbelievable goal. To execute that kind of pass, that was a terrific ball.

“In the second half, we stretched the opposition and created a number of opportunities. But, at the end of it, we stumbled to a win, and we’ll take that.

“I still want us to be more clinical. We’ve got to be better and the next two games coming up are going to test us. But we’ll build on that as we go. It’s a platform – two clean sheets and seven points out of nine.”

So ends a good week for the Sky Blues with the fans having at last something to be positive about.

City now have to prepare for Tuesday nights JPT game at York City and look to maintain the recent change in results.
