Coventry City 2 Blackpool 2

Coventry City were at home for the second time in four days on Tuesday night when they faced a Blackpool side looking to bounce back from their last-gasp defeat at Portsmouth on Saturday.

The Sky Blues’ game with Reading had seen some late drama as well with Lukas Jutkiewicz winning a penalty which he then blasted over the visitors crossbar.

After a bright start by the Sky Blues they soon found themselves being swamped in midfield by a Blackpool side who got plenty of joy from cross-field passes. Having had a goal disallowed the visitors then took the lead through a fine finish by Taylor-Fletcher. The 15-20 minutes after the goal were little more than a training exercise for Ian Holloway’s side as City were forced to pull an extra man back into midfield to counter the danger.

Gradually the home side clawed their way back into things, O’Donovan and Jutkiewicz coming close with headers and Jutkiewicz firing at the keeper after robbing a dozy defender.

City continued at the same tempo after the break but struggled to create much in the way of clear-cut chances. Andy Thorn made a trio of substitutions and Deegan, Christie and Platt all played their part in a stirring turnaround as first Deegan and then Jutkiewicz finished well.

Ian Holloway had been sent to the stands after City’s first goal, arguing that his side should have been allowed to make a change before the Sky Blues’ corner but it was in the injury time period that stemmed from Evatt’s injury that Holloway’s men equalised from a corner.

Just two points then from two home games but City can look back at a missed penalty and then an equalising goal, both in stoppage time, which prevented them beating both the beaten play-off finalists and a team who were in the Premier League last season.

“Fair play to them (Blackpool) they’re a good side, we changed our system a bit to stop them and then I thought we grew into the game.

“I was pleased with the way we came back, we had a few quiet words at half-time because my team don’t play like that.

“The way we came back is what we’re all about and we should have got the three points.”
