Coventry City took on Watford at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday afternoon with both sides desperate for the victory that they hoped would kickstart their Championship campaigns.

The Hornets arrived in CV6 on the back of a heavy defeat at the hands of West Ham and, like their hosts, struggling for goals after the summer departure of a top striker, in their case Danny Graham.

Andy Thorn’s Sky Blues meanwhile were looking to put injury-time heartbreak at Crystal Palace behind them and give their supporters some good news after it was made clear on Friday that the potential takeover of the club remained wishful thinking.

The opening 10 minutes of the game were overshadowed by off-field events as employees of the football club stopped their own paying customers from mounting peaceful protests against SISU but the backing for the team from a sparse crowd was excellent throughout.

City had most of the play throughout the opening 45 minutes but struggled to create chances and had a couple of narrow escapes just before the break as the referee and his assistant denied Watford both a penalty and an opening goal.

Only one team attempted to win the game after half-time however and it was the Sky Blues, driven forward by captain Sammy Clingan and with youngsters Christie and Bigirimana again excellent. A goalmouth scramble could have gone in and Watford survived some other scares to claim an away point.
