One of a number of managers in recent years to have found the task of reviving Coventry City beyond him, Chris Coleman is the favourite to succeed John Toshack as Wales manager, both with the bookmakers and his fellow professionals.
‘He is up there because he has experience,’ new Sheffield United manager Gary Speed told BBC Sport.
‘He has his coaching badges, he has managed at the top level for six or seven years and is out of work – so he is the one name that jumps out at me.’
Life at the wrong end of the Championship didn’t seem to suit the suave, media-friendly Coleman, who went straight into management in the Premier League at Fulham before a short spell at Real Sociedad.
Having gone back to work in the media since leaving the Ricoh Arena it may be that combining that work with being an international manager, of a crop of Welsh players of whom a big future is expected, fits the bill.
