The January transfer window is set to be a busy time for Coventry City and their manager Mark Robins as he continues to wrestle with the inconsistent nature of the Sky Blues’ side that he took over earlier in the season.
After consecutive wins against Orient, Arlesey and Crawley, Carl Baker’s opener against Scunthorpe on Saturday looked set to make it four wins on the bounce but, (in addition to a controversial penalty decision), City once again lost a lead through poor defending to remain just outside the League One relegation zone.
While a permanent deal to land McGoldrick will be the headline transfer business in the new year it is at the back that Robins will surely do the majority of his wheeling and dealing having quickly grown tired of the Scunthorpe scenario being repeated on a regular basis. The manager’s plans do not seem to include Chris Hussey, Kevin Malaga or Reece Brown and a new central defender and left back are likely to be on his shopping list.
City’s recruitment policy over the summer has, inevitably given the scarce resources, produced hit and miss results.
Andy Thorn obviously had some say in the signings but who was ultimately responsible? Given that McGoldrick arrived after Thorn’s sacking there seems to be more than one person involved. The task now is for Robins and development director Steve Waggott to come up with the names that improve the quality of the squad and their ability to produce more consistent results.
