Goals from Gary McSheffrey on 38 minutes with a penalty and a magnificent strike from Carl Baker, 18 seconds into the second half, gave Coventry City a comfortable lead in their FA Cup 2nd Round tie at the Ricoh Arena but they allowed Morecambe back into the game.

Kevin Ellison pulled back a goal on 77 minutes for the League Two side and from then on the Sky Blues had to defend for their lives.

Mark Robins’ men, for whom Chris Dunn made a rare start in goal, just managed to hang on for a potentially plum tie in Round 3.

Speaking afterwards to BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, Robins felt his side should have been out of sight before Morecambe’s goal.

“It was closer than it should have been, partly because for the second time in a week we’ve had a goal disallowed which shouldn’t have been, but we’re delighted to be in the hat and I thought we created enough chances to have won further.

“The move that led to Gary [McSheffrey’s] penalty was superb and [Carl] Baker’s goal was brilliant.

“I think that today was about getting through. It was a difficult game, we’ve won at home, and the supporters will have gone home fairly happy with it.”
