The transfer window is closed for another few months (although emergency loans will again be allowed for Football League clubs) and Coventry City have strengthened their squad with two highly-rated young defenders from Walsall while allowing strikers Dele Adebola and Kevin Kyle (on loan) to leave.
No tears will be shed over Kyle’s departure and the wages saved (and Kevin, ask Andy Morrell if Coventry fans are ‘the worst’ in the game, he may have a different answer for you).
Adebola’s exit will upset some but getting in a fee for a 32-year-old whose impact is getting less and less, especially when he starts a game, is not bad business.
As Andy Turner wrote in the Coventry Telegraph recently, the way to go has to be building a squad that if it went up into the Premiership could improve even further and compete when there. West Brom rather than Derby have to be the model.
To that end it is clear to see why City have held on to Leon Best. Although the headline fee of £1m+ from Forest looked attractive it would not represent much of a profit on a player who, although he hasn’t shown it yet, Iain Dowie believes will have a big future.
The Sky Blues have enough quality in the squad to move away from the relegation zone and given the circumstances of the season, a mid-table finish together with a couple of decent cup runs would not be a bad achievement, then the real transfer activity can begin again in the summer rather than the mad scramble to add bodies in January.
