Coventry City chairman Ray Ranson was a player the last time Newcastle United were in danger of relegation, shortly after Kevin Keegan had taken over as manager in 1992.

The Magpies then could have fallen into the third tier of English football had they not won at Leicester.

On Monday night they entertain Portsmouth, hoping to secure a win that gives them a fighting chance of avoiding a league trip to the Ricoh Arena next season.

Ranson told The People: ‘It was crucial we did not drop out of the old Second Division, but there were not the financial implications there are now if my old club were to lose their Premier League status.

‘Tomorrow night is far more important than 1992.’
