Coventry City will be left wondering how an hour of domination and a goal lead at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday turned into defeat at the hands of Burnley.
Cody McDonald’s first goal for the Sky Blues gave them a deserved second-half lead but that served merely to wake the visitors from their slumbers and two goals, the second of which came in stoppage time, handed them the three points.
Home fans vented their ire on the referee after the game but manager Andy Thorn, speaking to the BBC, refused to put the blame anywhere else but his own team, agreeing with the decision to send off Gael Bigirimana and bemoaning the defensive lapses which led to the two Burnley goals.
“I am not hanging anybody out to dry but when we heap praise on the lads, they have to take the criticism too,” he said.
“I thought we were so dominant that I could only see one result then, when we went in front, we backed off and that’s not what we are about.”
Opposite number Eddie Howe felt the Sky Blues ‘looked like a good side’ in the early exchanges but that his men took gradual control of the game after a substitution.
“This result gives us a chance,” he said.
“We are trying to build something here because there have been big changes in the summer throughout the club and we trying to create a new team, very quickly. We have got the basis of a good young team and that showed the character, attitude and team spirit.”
