Just hours after seeing his Middlesbrough side defeat Derby County at the Riverside Stadium, Gareth Southgate was walking away from the Teesside club after being sacked as manager.

Chairman Steve Gibson admitted that the decision had been made ‘two or three weeks ago’, in the wake of some disappointing results, including a 2-2 draw with Coventry City where Boro squandered a two-goal lead.

Former Sky Blues boss Gordon Strachan is the clear favourite to succeed Southgate in the role.
