Thursday is the final day for Football League clubs to make loan signings before the transfer market shuts down completely for one month.

Coventry City have allowed Chris Birchall to join Carlisle United until the end of the year, freeing up more of the wage bill after Gary Borrowdale’s move to QPR.

‘We watched Chris last season, so he is a player that we know all about.’ caretaker Carlisle boss Greg Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria.

‘He’ll provide a bit of strength and competition and we think that we have got ourselves a good player.’

Elsewhere in the Championship there have been plenty of moves.

Barnsley: The Tykes have snapped up Jamie Cureton from Norwich City on a three-month deal.

Blackpool: Manager Simon Grayson has signed Liam Dickinson, a forward from Derby County as well as drafting in West Ham winger Kyle Reid.

Charlton Athletic: Caretaker boss Phil Parkinson has been busy, signing striker Deon Burton from Sheffield Wednesday and defender Jay McEveley from Derby and allowing forward Luke Varney to move to Pride Park.

Doncaster Rovers: Steve Brooker of Bristol City is the man charged with getting Rovers scoring goals again after joining on a one-month deal.

Sheffield Wednesday: After allowing Burton to join Charlton, the Owls have replaced him with West Brom’s Bartosz Slusarski.

Watford: New manager Brendan Rodgers has returned to Chelsea to sign youngster Liam Bridcutt, a midfielder.
