Barnsley have confirmed that skipper and star midfielder Brian Howard is to leave the club once a suitable offer comes in.

Sheffield United are expected to sign the player, out of contract next summer, on loan ahead of a permanent £600,000 move in January.

The Blades, who signed winger Nathan Dyer on loan from Southampton on Friday, are one of three clubs thought to be keen on Tottenham flop Hossam Ghaly.

Bristol City and Birmingham are the other sides showing an interest.

Derby County have allowed Jay McEveley to join Preston on a month’s loan while Robbie Savage is weighing up offers from Crewe and Brighton among others.
