Portsmouth Football Club stand on the brink of closure on Friday night after talks between the administrators and former owner and key creditor Sacha Gaydamak broke down.

It appears likely that the club will now be closed down and liquidated by the administrators,’ said a club statement.

On a selfish level such a development would see a massive rejig of the Championship table with those sides who have already played Pompey (such as the Sky Blues, 2-0 winners at the Ricoh Arena on opening day) possibly having their results expunged.

On the wider level, losing a club with such a long and proud history would be a huge embarrasment to the English game and the Premier League in particular and would surely have to act as the ultimate wake-up call to those in charge that the financial madness affecting the game can continue no longer.

More to come no doubt on this story.
