CCFC: Will ‘Us Against The World’ Be Enough?

As June approaches its end Coventry City have no ground, a transfer embargo and hugely unpopular owners as three major hurdles to manager Steven Pressley building a side capable of challenging for promotion from League One in the 2013/14 season.

The Scot will also have to do so with a budget for wages that has been halved to around £2m for the coming campaign.

While the club’s off-field woes have undoubtedly contributed to money being tight, the reduction in wages in itself is no bad thing.

A host of clubs have shown that success can be achieved on a realistic budget and without paying over the odds to players who potentially then have less appetite to give their all for the club.

‘Spirit’

Pressley will have to draw on a host of factors to build an ‘us against the world’ spirit and alluded to that in his interview with the Coventry Telegraph earlier this week.

He said: ‘We also need a bit of a siege mentality around the football club with our supporters and really give the city something to be proud of, and that`s what we intend to do and I`ll work hard with that.’

Sadly, while City’s players will be assured of large and loud support in their away games, ‘home’ fixtures are set to be sparsely attended and vehicles for protest more than anything as peoples’ passions have been well and truly doused by the spirit-sapping past few months.
