CCFC Season Preview – Players

Football clubs in crisis offer opportunities for some and at Coventry City this season it is the chance of regular League One action for a number of young players.

Steven Pressley was brought to the club with a brief to develop those coming through the ranks and that, together with the transfer embargo in place, means the likes of Billy Daniels, Jordan Willis, Aaron Phillips and Callum Wilson should play a big part in 2013/14.

It also means that Cyrus Christie and Conor Thomas will be seen as senior players given the level of experience they already have.
Pressley’s core of players, who he can rely on to deliver week in week out, probably comes down to two names, Joe Murphy and Carl Baker. Leon Clarke is a guarantee of goals if he can remain fully-fit.

‘Embargo’

Christie, Thomas, Franck Moussa, Adam Barton, Blair Adams, John Fleck and Jordan Clarke will all need to deliver on a regular basis to help carry the team through some tough times as the embargo shows no signs on ending soon.

Add in the youngsters (who should be able to play with freedom as home games will be sparsely attended and away games will see them well-backed by travelling fans) and City have enough to keep their heads above water.

Wilson, in particular, could enjoy a fruitful campaign from the bench as he alone has the kind of pace that tests opposition defences.

Goalkeeper Murphy was in confident mood when speaking to the Telegraph this week, praising Jordan Clarke in particular for his performances in pre-season.

Off-field issues, however, are the unknown factor. The groundshare, in itself, should not prove too much of a problem as the Ricoh was hardly a fortress but the more the squad is stretched the tougher it will become while the threat of another points penalty looms large.
