A sell-out crowd at Ashton Gate with over 2,000 visiting supporters added to the spice of a huge relegation battle on Easter Monday as Bristol City took on the Sky Blues of Coventry City.

The two sides had swapped places in the table on Saturday with the Robins pulling off a vital win at Nottingham Forest while City were being pegged back by Peterborough at the Ricoh Arena.

That left the hosts one point ahead of their visitors at kick-off time and they had the better of the early exchanges before the Sky Blues settled into the game, forcing a trio of corners in succession and looking to benefit from the flicks and hold-up play of Clive Platt.

It was a set-piece that gave City the lead, in fortunate circumstances as a free-kick looped in off a defender and, with the back four looking assured once again and a tigerish midfield three of Deegan, Clingan and Norwood breaking up the play, they went into the break with a priceless advantage.

But, in a tale all too familiar to those who have followed the Sky Blues away from home this season, the lead was lost within minutes of the restart as Stead equalised to signal a period of Bristol domination.

That had died down slightly when Bolasie, with his first involvement as a substitute, got the crucial third goal of the game.

Pitman’s dismissal gave City some hope and Platt could not convert Nimely’s cross before, in the dying seconds, Wood sealed a victory which the home side deserved on the balance of play and which leaves them firmly in the driving seat to avoid the drop.
