Having been linked with both Coventry City skipper Carl Baker and young forward Callum Wilson recently, Sheffield United are being linked with a deadline deal for Wilson’s equally in-form strike partner Leon Clarke.

No stranger to the Steel City from his time with Wednesday, Clarke has proven himself to be a guarantee of goals at League One level over the past year and his absence from the City team through injury at the end of last season was keenly felt.

The Blades have made a misfiring start to life under David Weir and were again goalless when suffering a home defeat at the hands of MK Dons on Saturday.

‘Significant’

They are, however, expected to announce significant new investment in the club this week with the arrival of a new foreign partner after a lengthy search by owner Kevin McCabe.

For City the urge to cash in on their marketable players is always there given that the club must be losing large amounts of money every week.

They have, however, just gone through a summer without any money coming in at all and it would seem strange to sell on deadline day having partially ridden out some of the storms surrounding the club.
