Eight teams will compete for the European under-21 championship when the tournament begins in Denmark this weekend.

The focus in England will be on Stuart Pearce’s side but for Sky Blues fans there will be interest in the performances of Aron Gunnarsson as the midfielder lines up for Iceland when they look to continue their surprise form from the qualifiers, which included a 4-1 win over Germany for what has been described as a ‘golden generation’ of Icelandic footballers.

‘relaxed’

For Gunnarsson it is potentially a massive shop window (if he gets into the Iceland team) considering his Coventry City contract expires at the end of June. He has a new deal on the table at the Ricoh Arena but will undoubtedly see the under-21 championship as a chance to earn a big move.

As the recent poll on Vital Coventry shows, fans are relaxed about the prospect of losing Gunnarsson, whose superb debut season has yet to be replicated although he did show signs of a return to form under Andy Thorn in the final weeks of last season.
