Coventry City head into the marathon slog that is a 46-game Championship season with only goalkeepers Joe Murphy and Chris Dunn added to a squad that finished in the bottom half of the table in 2010/11.
Top goalscorer Marlon King has departed and dissatisfaction with the club’s owners has rumbled on throughout the summer, ready to explode should Saturday’s game against Leicester end in the away win that the bookmakers are predicting.
The Sky Blues must surely be the only side in their division (perhaps even among all 92 Premier League and Football League clubs) not to make an outfield signing during the summer and will instead rely on Andy Thorn continuing to squeeze more out of those players at his disposal as well as introducing more of the young players who have featured in pre-season into competitive action.
All City fans appreciate the economic reality facing both the club and football as a whole but having made substantial savings from the departures of several big earners, investing a percentage of that money back into the squad would have provided some evidence of ambition to do more than merely survive in the Championship.
Those heading to the Ricoh Arena on Saturday will do more in hope than expectation, hope fuelled by the way City finished last season, the boundless optmism of manager Thorn and the way that his players are so clearly behind their boss and the style of play he has set out.
