Coventry City’s 3-0 defeat at Millwall on Tuesday night left them in danger of being cut adrift in the relegation zone of the Championship and, for the first time, has led to the first serious discussion about the future of Andy Thorn as manager.
Backed to the hilt by Thorn at every stage of the season to date, the Sky Blues’ players were left in no doubt as to his feelings when they left South London.
‘I can’t understand how we can play the way we did in the first half and turn in that sort of performance in the second,’ he said.
‘That’s probably why the players are in this league, because if they were consistent and played the way they did in the first half in the second we would have won the game – I just don’t understand it.
‘It was like two different sides were playing out there and when people start to think they are individuals you have got problems. Our second-half performance was unacceptable – to turn in a performance like that was amateurish.
‘We had a few chances in that first half, we felt comfortable and we felt we had more gears to go into. I’m sick of hearing excuses and people having opinions that aren’t right, I know what’s right and the players will do what we say or they won’t be playing.’
Thorn however will know only too well that he does not have the options open to him to change his side drastically ahead of the weekend.
Most fans will agree with him that he is being let down to a certain degree by some of his senior players. Unfortunately the club’s finances mean that instead of two or three loan signings now coming in it is more likely that the relatively expendable Thorn will be jettisoned in the hope that another manager caan keep City in this division.
