Dele Adebola, one of the stars of Saturday’s FA Cup win at Blackburn, was close to leaving Coventry City at the start of the transfer window according to Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins.

He told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: ‘I had Adebola when he was a youngster at Crewe on loan with me when I was manager at Bangor.

‘I also know (Coventry owner) Ray Ranson quite well.

‘Adebola would have been a great signing for us. He wasn’t in the team at Coventry and we had just about agreed a transfer fee and terms.

‘But then Coventry got some injuries, Adebola got into the team and has started scoring some goals.

‘His situation there has now changed and they are talking about a new contract for him.’
