Coventry City FC say they will design and deliver a new stadium in the immediate vicinity of the city within three years – groundsharing in the meantime with another club – and have ruled out the prospect of returning to the Ricoh Arena.

The latest salvo in the ongoing war between club owners SISU and Ricoh owners ACL has come from chief executive Tim Fisher.

‘It’s a new era and we retained specialists some months ago to advise us on where to build a new stadium for the club – and in the immediate Coventry area by the way’.

Mr Fisher has promised ‘full consultation’ with supporters, beginning at the fans forum meetings that are due to be held shortly.

Vital View

It’s not the message that is wrong but the person delivering it. If someone else (Preston Haskell IV for instance) came along with this proposal then supporters may (reluctantly) have gone along with it for the long-term future of the club.

After all, although the Ricoh Arena has become the centrepiece of this dispute, City’s ‘home’ is not loved by supporters and is not fit for purpose.

Mr Fisher, however, faces a huge task in persuading anyone that this is a viable way forward.
