Despite being in the shadows of the Premier League, the Championship has grown in recent seasons to become one of the richest leagues in European football.

Money earned by clubs while in the top-flight, parachute payments, the Football League’s own TV and media deals and the fact that investors are now looking outside the Premier League all adds up to some serious money sloshing around.

Latest to confirm that are Ipswich Town. The Newcastle Evening Chronicle confirms that their offer for striker Shola Ameobi adds up to just under £4m.

Having gone through a lengthy period of financial hardship, Ipswich were taken over last season and are clearly intent on getting back into the top division.

Add them to the teams that have just come down, clubs such as Charlton and Sheffield United who remain in receipt of parachute payments and resurgent big-guns like Nottingham Forest (who have already paid £2.65m for Robert Earnshaw) and the Championship is shaping up to be tougher than ever next season.
